Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts at Leasowes Park

Saturday 04 July
Halesowen, West Midlands - 11am - 2 Hours
Birmingham Photography Group
Martin Tierney
We will be using various techniques to maximise the behaviour of the light. Backlighting is one of my favourites and can be used for portraiture or nature. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.Leasowes Park. 3 Leasowes Lane, Mucklow Hill, Halesowen B62 8DH

Pershore Rd, Birmingham - 11am - 2 Hours

Martin Tierney
Join this session for tips on how to use your camera settings to creatively capture nature in a visually interesting way. We will be looking at composition, focus, and colour.

Many professional offices and places of business have large prints gracing their wall space of things such as fields of flowers, a butterfly perched on a leaf, and a single dew drop on a rose petal. These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art. We will learn how to use different angles, light and shadows, and settings to make subjects pop.

I thought the event was a good introduction to composition. I was aware of several techniques beforehand but still found it helpful. The handout at the start helped to refresh my mind on the techniques available and made it easier to spot compositions as we walked around. Selina was easy to talk to as well.

This photo was taken just as the Sun was rising, casting a golden glow on the house , nestled in the South Shropshire Countryside. The image holds a special place in my heart, as where there is now a modern house, there was once a couple of old stone cottages where my late father lived as a young child. Given the nearest beach is around 3 hours away from me, I don't get to do too much photography around the coast. This was a day that started at 1.30am to get to Southwold in time for sunrise, and I went specifically for these awesome beach huts. The gamble paid off with a stunning sunrise. After getting the obligatory shots of the sun I decided to get a little creative amongst the huts, and came back with a few variations of this image.
